Last week I got a call from a gentleman in Toronto, 72 years old, retired engineer, homeowner, in great shape, who opened with: "Antoine, I know I'm too old, but..." I stopped him right there. By our experience at CQMI, I hear this line at least three times a week, and it rests on a complete misunderstanding.

This man isn't too old. He simply happens to live in the wrong dating market. In Canada, the US, the UK or Australia, a 72-year-old man looking for a companion runs into a relationship market that has largely written him off. Why a 70-year-old man has almost no chance left in the West

Let's be factual. A 70-year-old man who joins a Western dating app gets very few responses from women his age, and even fewer from younger women. The Western marriage market has changed fundamentally: women aged 55-65 are largely separated or divorced, financially independent, and many no longer plan to share their daily life with a man, however stable and kind he may be. A gap of 15, 18 or even 20 years with a 70-year-old man doesn't scare them at all. This is the first objection I hear from clients over 70: "I don't speak Russian or Ukrainian, how will we communicate?" My answer is always the same: this problem barely exists anymore. Two stories that sum up the situation

The heartwarming one: Robert, 74, a retired contractor from outside Melbourne, signed up convinced that "no one would want an old man like him." Three weeks later he had a waiting list of five serious correspondents, all between 52 and 58, and called us back laughing, asking how to politely turn some of them down.

The ironic one: One 71-year-old client insisted for weeks that we retouch his profile photo to make him "look fifty." 1. Choose profiles of women between 15 and 20 years younger than you, never more.
2. Introduce yourself simply, without apologizing for your age or bringing it up negatively.
3. Ask about her life, her children, her career: show genuine interest, not just physical attraction.
4. Move quickly to a video call to build a real connection, with translation support if needed.
5. Arrange a first in-person meeting within two to three months, don't wait indefinitely.
